For 20 years, Royal Electric has worked on building trust, relationships

March 3, 2014

Royal Electrical Service, Inc., owner Royal 'Roy' W. Trivett, Jr.Twenty years ago, Roy Trivett started his own business with a handful of tools and a Toyota pickup truck. Trivett had worked with his father at Johnson Electric during his high school years and the two often had talked about starting their own business together.

"We always thought about it and dad and I talked about it," Trivett said. "I always had that ambition to do my own thing and when the opportunity arose, I took a chance."

Trivett's full first name, like his father's, is Royal.

So, even though his father had passed by then, Royal Electric was born in November 1993. Since its inception, Trivett wanted the company to provide a broad range of services, from business and industrial to residential needs.

Soon after starting, Trivett was able to hire two more men, Paul Villegas and Tom Hobbs.

"We just started growing little by little," he said.

The company picked up an electrical maintenance contract for Boeing and by 1995, Royal Electric was renting space on Third Street.

Two years later, Royal Electric found its current home on West Second Street and Trivett continued to expand his business. He added a motor shop in 1995.

In 2002 the company began dealing in heating and air conditioners, and added a sheet metal shop three years later.

Throughout the life of Royal Electric, Trivett said he's looked for niche markets, products or demands that may be underserved or simply not served at all in the Pueblo area.

"Everything was kind of a one-step-at-a-time process," Trivett said.

Royal is looking into expanding into the LED lighting business now that demand for the new, energy-efficient lighting systems is growing.

"It's the little niches that we can get into and take care of customers' needs," he said.

But the company continues to have the ability to handle traditional and large-scale projects, as well.

Trivett said his success also is due to maintaining strong ties in the community and with his customers.

The company has been engaged in numerous sponsorships, including heavy involvement in the YMCA.

Giving back to the community is important, he said. And Trivett has even helped out abroad, contributing work on an orphanage in Haiti.

Royal Electrical Services in located at 820 West 2nd Street in PuebloRoyal Electric was honored as the Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce's Business of the Year in 2000 and maintains memberships in both Pueblo chambers.

"I think Pueblo is a great community, as far as the people and the relationships you build," he said. "But you have to prove yourself, too. You have to do what you say you're going to do."

Trivett said Royal Electric was inoculated to a degree from the economic collapse of 2008 because the business was diverse and not so reliant on the construction business.

The company has grown in the past 20 years from one person and a truck to more than 30 employees. Right now, Royal Electric employes 27 people.

Trivett said his time at Johnson Electric provided him a great education in how to manage a business. He said he tries to treat all of his employees like family.
